Mellon Junior High

Andrew W. Mellon Junior High School was completed in 1937. It stands on 4.5 acres on Castle Shannon Boulevard near Washington Road, essentially adjacent to Washington Elementary School. Mellon accommodated all junior high school students until Thomas Jefferson Junior High School was completed in 1958. During our tenure Mellon served grades 7-9. In 1986, long after our tenure, both Mellon and Jefferson Junior Highs were closed due to the declining school-age population of Mt. Lebanon. The high school was renovated to accommodate grades 7-12, with the junior highs operating on the sixth floor. Mellon was renovated at a cost of $8.5 million and reopened in 1998 as a middle school serving grades 6-8 from the Foster, Howe and Washington Elementary School districts.
