Carl was the closest and dearest of friends when we met at age 12. He had just moved from the other side of Lebo to the Lincoln Bum district. We walked to Jefferson almost every day for three years. Carly was friends with a peronality form KDKA radio's son, Zeke Jackson (who went on the become a local DJ himself), and Zeke sold us a turntable set, amplifier, tubes and wires for $75. We became the school dance disc jokeys, along with Bill Austin, after winning a school contest. Carl and I would sneak out at night and prowl the neighborhood, doing not much more than swiping a couple donuts from theback of Isaly's baked by the bakery a couple doors down (on Beverly). We both moved away, moved back and moved away, but stayed in touch. I was fortunate to be able to visit with him in New Hampshire three years ago, just after he had moved there from Ohio. He wasn't much for reunions, marching to his own music it seemed, but that is what led him to be one of the first in our class to recognize the power of the Beatles and appreciate the poetry of Bob Dylan. There were a half dozen of us that hung together throughout high schooland early college. Two have now passed in the last year or so (Buzz Ritter), so it brings home with force my sense of mortality. Carl loved a glass of scotch, one ice cube, so, perhaps, we can individully toast him in that manner this evening...

That was a beautiful tribute . How fortunate that you and Carl shared wonderful memories. Aging and acceptance of loss were never intended for sissies. All emotions lately seem more poignant. Perhaps it is the l exhausting global pandemic, the nostalgia during the holiday season of better times in the past, and then not to mention the elephant in the room - our own mortality . Gratitude for each and every day.  A toast to Carl Evans .

THE TRAIN OF LIFE

“At birth, we board the train and meet our parents, and we believe they will always travel byour side.

As time goes by, other people will board the train; and they will be significant i.e. our siblings, friends, children, and even the love of your life.

However, at some station our parents will step down from the train, leaving us on this journey alone.

Others will step down over time and leave a permanent vacuum.

Some, however, will go so unnoticed that we don’t realise they vacated their seats.

This train ride will be full of joy, sorrow, fantasy, expectations, hellos, goodbyes, and farewells.

Success consists of having a good relationship with all passengers requiring that we give the best of ourselves.

The mystery to everyone is: We do not know at which station we ourselves will step down.

So, we must live in the best way, love, forgive, and offer the best of who we are.

It is important to do this because when the time comes for us to step down and leave our seat empty we should leave behind beautiful memories for those who will continue to travel on the train of life.
I wish you all a joyful journey.”  Unknown

Elaine and Michael.....what beautiful comments angel

I did not know Carl, but I did (actually we all did) have that special connection of friendships from our years at Mt. Lebo Schools.....  It was the best place to grow up happy, warm & friendly people...we were blessed.  I too hold the memories of the times...Thanks for putting a period on that thought process smiley

I enjoyed reading Mike Roberts' comments.  Carl and I went to Washington School together before he moved to the Lincoln side of town.  I think he was one of the first boys I ever had a crush on, although I am sure he did not know it.  Too bad our high school was so big  and our class so large that  we all had to find our own small groups of friends, because I don't remember Carl that well at MLHS other than saying hi in the halls  and so on ( I don't even think we had any classes together).   I am glad to know Carl kept in touch with good friends and marched to the beat of his favorite music. I will raise a glass of (probably something other than Scotch) to him tonight!

I knew Carl Evans well, although we lost touch.  I am very sad to hear of his passing.
