Rod graduated from Northwestern University in June, 1969 with a BS degree in Business Administration. Shortly thereafter he enlisted in the Marine Reserves and was sent to Paris Island for basic training, where he contracted a fatal infection from routine innoculations.
Rod and I were good friends. We had been in plays together at the high school. Also, some times we would go bowling just for the fun of it. I don’t remember if we even kept score. I do remember there were times we would laugh so hard. One summer, when we were in college, he invited me to go to Ocean City where we stayed with his parents and went to the beach each day. We had a good time then too. The summer he graduated from Northwestern, I went to his house to invite him to a play I was in. His mother and father met me at the door. They had me come in, sit down and told me that Rod had passed away that week. I was shocked, very sad, and felt so sorry for his family. The next day, I went to the funeral home and to his funeral. Every time I ride past his house I remember that day. I am glad I can also remember the happy times we had.
