I thought Bob Wells was the best-looking, coolest boy in the 8th grade. Athletic and self-composed, he seemed unapproachable. We did become friends later, but my fondest memory of him is of Mr. Andrew's 8th grade music class, where each of us had to perform a "talent" in the classroom show. Most everyone, including me and my partner Joan Thompson, paired up and did a funny skit or sang something pop. Bob stood up by himself, looking sheepish, and with Mr. Andrews accompanying him sang a shy solo version of "Oh Come All Ye Faithful." I couldn't believe it. He was actually a human being!
